A man died in a Nevada hospital after allegedly selling a sexual performance enhancement supplement that the Food and Drug Administration is warning about.
John K. Rochon, 52, was a resident of the Nevada Nevada Hospital on Las Vegas and had been taking Viagra for three months.
His wife, Mary K. Rochon, said her husband had sold the supplement without his knowledge, but the FDA did not find it safe.
Kwikmed, a product of Pfizer Inc., is being promoted as an effective alternative to Viagra, the company said. It also has been advertised to men who suffer from erectile dysfunction.
According to a recent report from The Associated Press, an estimated 7% of Viagra users said they used it as part of their treatment.
Kwikmed’s product is advertised as a sex-enhancing drug, not as a sexual performance enhancer. The agency says that is not true, the company said.
Kwikmed was found to have been working with a doctor to increase its effectiveness, according to the FDA.
Rochon, who was not named in the product’s label, is currently being investigated by the Food and Drug Administration for possible links to sexual performance enhancement products, the FDA said.
The FDA also said it had received “multiple reports of individuals using sexual enhancement products advertised as having potentially dangerous side effects.”
There are other supplements in the market that can be purchased without a prescription, including dietary supplements. In April 2010, a supplement company announced it had filed with the FDA a lawsuit against a California state board of pharmacy for its drug, Viagra.
The FDA said it is investigating the claims.
The FDA also said it has received “multiple reports of individuals using sexual enhancement products advertised as having potentially dangerous side effects.”
Kwikmed is said to have been taking the supplement for three months and that the FDA found the drug to be safe. Rochon said she and Kwikmed had been together for about five months and that it had become “very close” to working with a doctor.
The supplement company also said that “we’re not saying there’s no risk, it’s very common.”
Kwikmed has been linked to a potentially dangerous side effect known as “erectile dysfunction,” according to the FDA.
“Viagra’s most popular brand name in the world is Pfizer’s Viagra,” Kwikmed’s product label states.
“Viagra is a medication that is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men and works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis,” the FDA said. “It may also help to increase blood flow to the genital area, which may help to produce an erection.”
The FDA’s action comes just months after an FDA panel voted 11-7 to recommend that it not approve a new drug for treating an enlarged prostate. The FDA said that was not true.
The FDA said that the agency does not have a link to sexual performance enhancement products but said it is confident that the product is safe.
Rochon’s lawyer said that Kwikmed’s lawsuit is “not related to sexual performance enhancement” and is “unsubstantiated.”
Pfizer, the manufacturer of Viagra, said it did not know of any cases it had filed against the company.Rochon said the FDA is reviewing the case and may decide to move forward with its investigation.
Kwikmed said it was not aware of any of the statements made by the company. It is not clear what other company statements were made.
Kwikmed was previously listed in the company’s product newsletter, and it was available on its website.Kwikmed’s lawsuit is “not related to sexual performance enhancement,” the FDA said.
In an email to The Associated Press, Kwikmed said it had been found to have been working with a doctor to increase the effectiveness of the product.
Rochon, who is under investigation by the FDA for possible drug violations, did not respond to a request for comment.

What is erectile dysfunction?Erectile dysfunction, or erectile dysfunction (ED), is a condition characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual activity. More serious, though not life-threatening, these symptoms can lead to a serious condition known as priapism, where the penis does not fully develop an erection. Based on evidence from clinical trials, the term erectile dysfunction may be confusionfully used to promote or maintain an erection.
